Contrary to the belief that it is a wall made of curtains (a popular assumption, shockingly), a curtain wall is designed to protect the structural integrity of a building. They are the outside walls that defend the house against the elements and outside forces.
They were originally used in the Middle Ages to keep out invading enemies, but the ages have changed and today they merely keep out rain and wind. It does not hold any of the buildings weight. Nor does it support any of the roof’s weight. It is simply an attachment in addition to the wall. The curtain wall serves as a protector of the wall. It prevents the wall from becoming damaged by the elements such as wind, rain, snow and etc. It also helps to prevent the walls from swaying during a very strong wind. It also helps to balance the building by distributing the gravity and staying stable.
Modern curtain walls can be constructed from glass. This means you can have all the advantages of the curtain wall while still having the outside be visible and sunlight filter through. Curtain wall are very useful as a way to prevent fire damage since it stops fire from spreading.
